NEW YEAR’S Dress or Top. Or a Summer Wedding Dress?

*****

Finally found time to update this top down crochet dress pattern to my current writing style :).

NOT a single STITCH or CHART were changed though!

So, what was adjusted then?

– Added a new cover photo on page 1. Alas, I was not able to show photos of the front on me at the time of publishing this dress pattern – on November 3rd, 2017 [checked the day on Ravelry :)] :), therefore most photos showed my belly covered. For the PDF I took a photo of this dress laid flat in 2017.

– Font changed to size 11.

– The majority of pages are now easier to browse on tab or mobile.

– Some explanations were simplified.

– Added a note that recommended hook sizes are for the designer’s tension only. I really want you to SUCCEED in making this dress or top, therefore please allow time to check your gauge in every clothing project you make. You might crochet tighter or looser than me.

Please download this New Year’s Dress pattern from your Ravelry library. Updated PDF was also sent to all crocheters who have purchased it in my other shops.

P.S. Yes, I deliberately wanted to create this dress without a well-defined waist – silk stretches, so by the end of the day the waist-rows move slightly toward hips 😄. Plus, the well-defined waist looks perfect on thin catwalk models, while this dress pattern was designed for REAL women, with all our vast “crochet experience” around our bellies 🙆‍♀️

This dress pattern was published in my shops:

XL/2XL with bust 113-119 cm (45-47’’); hips up to 130 cm (51’’).
The top-down construction makes it possible to try it on as you go for the perfect fit. Length can be regulated as you go, so you can crochet a top, a tunic or a dress.

TRANSFORMATION of patterns: Dress, Top or Skirt?

*****

You definitely played this game where you change or add 1 letter in a word to make a new word.

Like dog-log-bog-big-sig-sign-sigh-sight-light-might-right-bright and so on.

What about the world of crochet patterns? How a few stitches gave birth to a whole collection of 10 crochet patterns 😊. Let’s talk about TRANSFORMATION!

1. The first project was this top with oval motif that I’ve made by looking at photos of one ready-made-garment. I liked the oval motif very much, but my completed top looked a bit childish – little wing sleeves, a loop with motifs along the bottom – those are all elements from garments that I could wear as a child (cute, but now I prefer to be taken seriously :)), so the transformation began…

2. I removed the sleeves and the loop of round motifs and introduced a skirt with the same stitch pattern as in my top. The new dress looked more serious, more wearable, but the low waist, the straight skirt and all the proportions reminded me of 20-ies style…

3. Let’s turn it into a stunning maxi dress with another matching stitch pattern! But what else will be matching here? I shall somehow multiply this single row of shells. I couldn’t find any existing shell-stitch pattern, so I’ve improvised :). Not bad, right? The only issue is adjusting the placement of the oval for women with a smaller torso because the oval can’t be placed lower than it’s on me (I’m 175 cm = 5’75”). No way of describing such an adjustment in a few words and draw charts for each height :)). So, this dress pattern is recommended for tall women.

4. These shells are pretty, right? And actually they can make a perfect summer skirt? Sure! And the knee-length skirt is ready! What about maxi skirt? Yep! It’s one of my most popular skirts by the way :)).

5. Off-the-shoulder fashion was in time. Can we just add the off-the-shoulder part to my skirt? Easy-peasy. It’s also one of the simplest patterns, beginner friendly.

And it’s offered in my ETSY shop with a 30% discount till the end of July 2020 with the code CREATIVE

6. Those spaces between shells look a bit empty… Let’s fill them in with picots and make something new. A crop top QUESTION and a longer top are ready!

7. My bestseller dress (and the dress with the most completed projects) has derived from the previous top. That’s why it was named unQUESTIONable. The length is fully adjustable, the waist can be started earlier, the pattern-repeat is easy and quite intuitive and the join of rows is invisible (that’s probably what experienced crocheters pay attention for – join of rows and seams should be really impeccable in any handmade item so it looks as a professionally-made garment).

All that was left from project 1 to its long  way to project 9 are just 3 rows around the oval motif :).
