Crochet crop top PATTERN – by Free People

What’s more perfect for summer crochet outfit than a sexy crop top, allowing your skin to breathe? This irresistible design with vintage-inspired flared sleeves is a crochet dream come true. Style yours with high-waisted trousers to temper the shorter silhouette or with a maxi skirt for a glamorous, head-turning bohemian look.

I started making this pattern when it appeared on Free People website. However, I think it is better to publish it for those who missed purchasing it and would like to crochet the one of their own.

Love the look of this top but hate breaking the yarn after completing each motif? Me too! For this top additional photo-tutorial is included explaining how to crochet such round motifs without cutting off the yarn and how you can finish the loop of square motifs in each sleeve without hiding lots of ends. After grasping this NO-YARN-BREAKING concept you will be able to crochet all motif-garments without doing any harm to yarn skeins (and saving your time : ))

PATTERN for the crop crochet top is available here:

Feel free to share photos of your completed project on mycrochet.conceptcreative.store  or Ravelry in exchange for one of these two patterns (please send me the details of your transaction and choose poncho or dress pattern).

You will receive:

â–ș detailed tutorial in ENGLISH with charted and written explanations for crocheting every row (in case you are not used to work with the crochet charts);

â–ș colourful diagrams supporting this pattern;

â–ș  photo-tutorial for working such round motifs without cutting off the yarn and making the loop of square motifs in each sleeve without hiding lots of ends.

This crochet pattern is given for bust circumference 91 cm/36”. I have included suggestions on how big should be your gauge if you wish to crochet this crop top for bust circumference 84-89 cm/33’’-35” and 96-101 cm/38-40’’. In this case you will need to use another yarn and/or hook (for example, for bust 101 cm/40’’ the width of each round motif will be just 1 cm (0.4”) larger than in the original top shown in photos).

P.S. Recently I came upon this chart for SIMILAR looking vintage motifs:  Recently I came upon this chart for SIMILAR looking vintage motifs, though none of these rows corresponds with rows in top shown in the cover photos. , though NONE of these rows corresponds with rows in top shown in the cover photos. I’ve also noticed that some not reliable pattern-shops recopied instructions for doilies published in vintage crochet magazines to promise you the same crochet top. Come along after you have received complete refund from them because such patterns show how to make similar looking doilies but offer vague and not tested connections between motifs in sleeves so that you will need to find your own way of arranging everything into the ORIGINAL crochet top shown in the cover photos.

Tunic for yarn leftovers – PATTERN

What is most essential to crochet your wearables neatly?

First of all is the yarn! The thicker is the yarn the faster and thicker will be your clothing garment, the more protruding will be all seams and imperfections, the most likely you will not want to wear it outside the house. Second, whether you crochet loose or tight? I’d be very careful with loose crochet stitches – in some boho garments they look beautiful and in more classical apparel they will imply crocheter’s negligence. Third, is the blocking of your completed garment, because this final step reveals the beauty of all stitches.

crochet sweater PATTERN for sizes XS-4XL

I love summer crochet garments made with fingering yarn weight (4 ply) and when several rows of solid double crochet stitches emphasize the contrasting lacy geometric patterns. Such garments remain lacy enough, not too thick to make you sweaty, and do not take ages to complete.

In this project I have combined 6 different colours – LEFT OVERS remaining after finishing this off shoulder tunic, diagonal jacket, my boho tunic with tassels, this tunic, three 50-gr balls of cotton/rayon (I loved the dark blue colour even if the yarn shop had 3 balls only : )) and light blue yarn that was left after completing a very old project made for my husband’s sister 8-9 years ago. She put on some weight since then and gave her present away :).

Two colours were originally of DK-weight/8ply and I divided yarn in 2 strands to have Fingering weight/4 ply.

As you might have seen, I love this combination of blue and beige colours very much:

Beach crochet tunic – PATTERN

Intricately detailed, this crochet cotton tunic is ideal for covering up while at the seaside. Semi-sheer vertical lines optically slender your body, while the round motifs provide enough coverage for your hips. Practical relaxed fit design allows not to suffer from the heat (comparing with snug fit summer crochet garments). To draw even more attention show off one of your shoulders. Style this tunic over your swimsuit at the beach or with shorts and classic leather sandals.

This gorgeous crochet tunic features beautiful cold shoulder cut outs allowing you to be elegant and sexy without being overexposed. This is one of my favorite styles, partly because it suits not only young girls but classy women who like to wear feminine and trendy crochet garments. And partly because this tunic is so versatile and flattering! Want to look instantly cool? Pair it with fitted jeans and basic tops to show off your tanned shoulders. By the way, Missguided also offers this beautiful cold shoulder dress in their collection:

Missguided cold shoulder crochet dress

Their website states the dress was made made of thick 100 % acrylic yarn. I’d definitely stay away from any type of acrylic for a good breathing summer garment. Acrylic can be quite soft, but deep in their soul, they’re still plastic yarns. It’s not very compy to have plastic on your skin in hot summer.

Recently a team at Plymouth University in the UK spent 12 months analyzing what happened when a number of synthetic materials were washed at different temperatures in domestic washing machines, using different combinations of detergents, to quantify the microfibres shed. They found that acrylic was responsible for releasing nearly 730,000 tiny synthetic particles per wash, five times more than polyester-cotton blend fabric, and nearly 1.5 times as many as polyester (source).

Crochet filet top PATTERN

I have published this little filet pattern in my store http://conceptcreative.store/shop/roses-top-crochet-pattern-crochet-tutorial-in-english/  The top is perfect for layering – pair it with tight-fitting tank tops or sweaters, jeans or skirts. It might be a good idea for some of your left overs. For top in the photo I have used just 130 gram/4.6 oz of 4 ply (UK, AU), Fingering (US), 400 m/100 gr, 440 yards/3.5 oz cotton. But it can be made with thin wool and worn in winter.

The roses are created by filling in a basic mesh pattern with double crochet stitches (in American crochet terms). Filet garments are created with only two stitches: the chain and double crochet. This pattern is easy to follow if you know the filet technique. There are no lengthy instructions like /1 dc, 2 ch, skip 2 ch/ because the filet technique is gridlike and therefore it is not about reading – it’s about crocheting. Grid is the most important thing here.

This pattern includes filet grid for size S, instructions for calculating the amount of stitches if you crochet for bigger sizes, tutorial in English of how to work filet patterns, make necessary decreases for the armholes. Row-by-row description for edge pattern is included.

The pattern is also available on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/listing/166001879/crochet-top-pattern-fillet

My friend received such a blue tunic with long sleeves for her birthday (I crocheted a present for her) – it is one of her favorite now :)). Plus I made a skirt with the same filet roses (with a thicker yarn) for her teenage daughter:

You can use these filet roses in other clothes and accessories or create cozy decorative things for your home (crochet pillow covers, lacy curtains etc).

Combining crochet patterns with fabric – two inspiring projects

1. Crochet edging onto old fabric shirt:

Recently I’ve noticed that collar and cuffs in my MEXX shirt lost their original black colour and became somewhat grayish. Front, back and sleeves were made of another fabric (machine knitted) and remained black. So, I’ve decided to replace collar, plackets and cuffs with crocheted ones.

First of all, carefully cut them off:

cut off

Then I’ve cut a V-neck because it would be simpler to crochet a border all around. I’m not that good in sewing,  therefore asked a professional tailor to finish all raw edges with a thread serger.

Now choose a nice edge pattern. These shells from an old crochet magazine should look lovely in my shirt:

conceptcreative

I had one ball of thin black rayon left from another project. Rayon is good for decorations because it is colourfast.

As far as I know rayon is no longer made in the USA – in 2004, the last of the U.S. rayon production facilities were closed due to EPA regulations.  Current rayon producing countries include China, India, and some European countries. You can use polyester which is also colourfast.

Then I have worked chains until their length has reached the length of my plackets and bottom (all around), worked one row of single crochet stitches and sewed this foundation row to my shirt. For plackets I crocheted 4 rows of this chart over the row of single crochet (additional stitches should be added at the corners so that they remain flat). After finishing I’ve sewn on 4 buttons and made buttonholes on the opposite side.

For cuffs I had to improvise a little so my cuffs become 12 cm/4.7” long. I’ve made the same foundation row, worked 4 rows of the chart and then repeated 3rd and 4th rows in the checkerboard order until the desired length.

This is my new jacket (clickable photos):

conceptcreative-store-shirt conceptcreative-store-shirt2

It’s is a simple but gorgeous project for using up some yarn leftovers and brighten up your wardrobe. You don’t have to be a fashion designer to combine the two crafts but surely you will create a unique OOAK clothing in a snap.

2. Crochet top with fabric skirt:

I have seen many different projects lately for combining crochet and fabric. Since I had a few balls of pistachio colour that would not be enough for some serious project (I do not crochet scarfs, hats or doilies – I get bored with easy projects), I’ve decided to make top like in the famous crochet Victoria’s Secret dress and ask a professional tailor to sew the bottom.

This famous crochet dress by Victoria’s Secret is already sold out, but if you like to crochet, it’s not a problem to make your OWN creation! : ). A form fitting bodice teamed with a plunging V-neck make this irresistibly feminine silhouette. His head will spin as you walk by!  Here is the result (clickable photos):
