Detour Sweater: Crochet Pattern

***

You gave birth to a baby and you want her to be in best hands before she starts her independent life…

And that is how I feel about my new crochet sweater pattern – I would like to give “an early bird price” (44 % off the price) to active crocheters who cherish my patterns, love them, start crocheting them right away and don’t let them lay months and years in their online library (or forget them on an older computer). I want to see this baby grow, and that’s my way of showing love to these crocheters.

People buy hundreds of patterns because they look lovely, and they don’t finish them because they see other lovely patterns :)). Some crocheters like to support designers this way, but I don’t live from selling patterns. The early bird price minus all Paypal and Etsy fees does not cover one cup of cappuccino in my local café (and probably in yours too :)), so prices for crochet patterns are really peanuts. I really enjoy seeing your completed projects, that is why I offer motivating CAL processes.

The best way of supporting pattern designers is crocheting their patterns and not buying them in tonnes :).

That is also the reason of why I don’t give discounts on multiple patterns – I want to save your money and not lengthen your never-ending queue of patterns :).

I offer two price options:

$4.75 – early bird price for those who start crocheting right away and share photos of their WIP (price for CAL in September-October 2019)

$8.50 – normal price for those who collect crochet patterns in their library and never share their WIP photos (price from October 2019)

Prices are subject to VAT in some countries.

Design elements:

This project will be worked in the round without seams. The raised back and bust darts create a better fit, while the stretchy fabric will feel like a second skin. This sweater is designed without a humpback that is so common in circular yoke sweaters.

AMBIANCE ORIGAMI: Sweater Crochet Pattern – published!

I don’t want to challenge conventions of beauty and create something ill-fitting that swamps the body and uses enormous amount of yarn. So, even if every catwalk seems to show oversize and awkward looking chunky knits I prefer wearing more proportional and comfortable clothes. Especially if they are oversized :).

And I’m very happy that regardless of this trend for strange-looking fashion, my oversize top became popular on http://www.lovecrochet.com  – I see it regularly among their hottest tops. Yea, I finally published several patterns there :).

Or maybe it’s because it’s dressier and sharper than a conventional tee and people love timeless appeal? 🙂

I suggest to crochet it in white because

  1. White tops are hot weather appropriate, they make any outfit look crisp, modern and fresh.
  2. They are great if you are tired of darker winter garments and want to lighten up.
  3. White tops look perfect with lots of other colors, they are wardrobe essential for any style.

Mohair crochet sweater – PATTERN

It’s a bit difficult to think of a nice sweater if you love minimalism, crochet, but hate sweaters made entirely in double crochet stitches. Yep, minimalism forever, but not as boring 😊. Also out of questions are things crocheted with one stitch-pattern, then with second, third. It should be something nice, wearable and catching.

This sweater was made with stashed mohair: 2 skeins remaining from this project  and 3 skeins of white mohair, all bought 7-8 years ago.  My mohair/nylon had 600 m per 100 gr-weight.

Mohair crochet pullover – PATTERN

I loved the colour of this mohair/nylon yarn and bought 8 skeins 4-5 years ago, however could not find a nice project for a long time. Originally this yarn was intended for a knitting garment, but I did not like any results. I think the mohair yarn for beautiful knitting garments should be much thinner than mine. I like those subtle and ephemeral mohair lace knit creations, but they are made of yarn approximately 900-1000 meters per 100 grams. My mohair/nylon had 600 m per 100 gr-weight.
Then I tried different crochet ideas, but most crochet patterns were somehow not suitable for this fiber because the whole look seamed “overloaded” and I could not show the beauty of my yarn. Until I started making these waves:

Crochet pullover pattern for sizes US (4-6-10-12-16-18-22-24), UK (8-10-14-16-20-22-26-28), Europe (36-38-42-44-48-50-54-56).

Good thing with my thick mohair is that I was able to undo several crocheted rows during my experiments. Because the mohair yarn is held together by a nylon thread I have unraveled the stitches without ruining the fiber quality. The mohair yarn is quite fuzzy and the stitches cling to each other, so I used a big sewing needle and picked all stitches one by one.  It took quite a while, so some patience was necessary : )).

For embellishment I’ve used thin ribbon of a matching colour.

Geometry in crochet – pullover with asymmetric scalloped edge – PATTERN

Crochet pullover PATTERN for sizes M-XL

I’ve been thinking of crocheting a black warm pullover for a long time. But either there was a lack of ideas of I was busy with other projects, so the pullover had to be postponed. Then at night before one of my short trips I just could not get asleep – I had 700 gram (approx. 24.5 oz) of black wool/acrylic yarn and I badly wanted to start crocheting pullover : ))). By that time my previous handmade partly knitted/partly crocheted black pullover got shrunk (maybe I’ll use it in a felting project later).

So, first of all I was thinking of a shape of the pullover – it has to be something unconventional, probably asymmetric. By morning the shape was chosen – you can see it in these photos.

Crochet pullover PATTERN for sizes M-XL Crochet pullover PATTERN for sizes M-XL

Now another good question – I have a great asymmetric shape, but what patterns will fill it in? : ) I was searching for different crochet patterns in my laptop until I came across this little piece (from a vintage crochet magazine).

creaconcepts15a

Luckily an artist friend who was looking at my struggles could give me some advice about at what angle is better to place different crochet parts of the pullover so they create an accomplished look. Then it was the usual work in Photoshop – placing the existing vintage diagram under different angles to fill in the shape of the drawn pullover. Crocheting was even more exciting – experimenting with angles, working several rows and then unraveling them because the stitches weren’t as diagonal as I wanted them. It took almost a month of getting the pullover right.

Crochet pullover PATTERN for sizes M-XL Crochet pullover PATTERN for sizes M-XL Crochet pullover PATTERN for sizes M-XL Crochet pullover PATTERN for sizes M-XL

And final part was creating detailed pattern for every row for sizes M-L-XL. In an asymmetric garment with diagonal crochet patterns you can’t just add several stitches and rows as in skirts (now I regard patterns for maxi skirts as a child’s play :)). All decreases were different, top of the sleeve for size XL had to be completely reworked and it took quite a while. Actually drawing complete charts of elaborate patterns helps a lot and I wonder how people can create intricate crochet patterns if they can’t read charts. It must take ages for them!

This crochet sweater pattern is available here:

www.etsy.com/listing/154200044/crochet-sweater-pattern

https://conceptcreative.store/warmness-sweater-crochet-pattern

You will receive:

► detailed instructions in English for every row for sizes
M with bust measured 88-94 cm (34.5-37’’),
L with bust measured 98-104 cm (38.5-41’’),
XL with bust measured 108-114 cm (42.5-45’’).
links for downloading all diagrams for sizes L and XL are given in the tutorial.

► diagrams in PDF format for front, back and sleeves as well as over 50 photos of the process (browse screen shots of several pages of the tutorial in Etsy; all charts are blurred).

► written explanation of all rows of the diagrams is included (in case you are not used to work with the crochet charts); keep the original margins of the file.

This one costs more than my usual patterns because of time I invested into creating the detailed tutorial and because I can’t offer it cheaper seeing that simple crochet things for beginners are sold everywhere in Etsy and Ravelry for 5-7 usd.

Yarn Saver Tip: Before you decide to crochet any sweater made with thick yarn – please pay attention to sleeves and seams in photos. Whether the wearer hides all excessive width under her arms or garments have not flattering bumps at armholes? Many free crochet sweaters made with thick yarn, double crochet stitches (without chains in between) have T-shapes, because such sleeves do not require any shaping. T-shaped lacy kimonos made with thin thread do look fine because any excessive width drapes beautifully along the sides. All excessive thick double crochet stitches not only consume more yarn, but will be gathered under your arms (especially if you intend to wear sweaters under winter coats) because people are not built in T-shapes.
